Pack your cowboy boots and chaps, and don’t forget your favorite Clint Eastwood movie to watch on your flight to Amarillo. Located in the Texas panhandle and still acquiring its fortunes from cattle ranching, Amarillo is fast becoming one of the more popular travel destinations in Texas.
At first glance, Amarillo might not seem to offer a lot in the way of typical tourist attractions but this city is famed for a few notable things: the Amarillo Livestock Auctions, the Cadillac Ranch, and The Big Texas Steak Ranch, where patrons get a free meal if they can finish their 72 ounce beef steak in under an hour. Visitors needing a little more civility can head to downtown Amarillo where the ballet, the opera and many other cultural events take place. Whatever your reason for visiting Amarillo, it’s sure to be an experience you’ll never forget. Live out your cowboy or cowgirl fantasy by booking a cheap flight to Amarillo and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the Old West.
Amarillo has a basically dry, semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are scorching hot, and winters can be numbingly cold. The area is prone to severe weather conditions, having experienced ice storms, drought, and floods. Average annual rainfall is difficult to calculate, there being little constancy. Rain falls mainly in thunderstorms, some of them quite violent, between March and October. Snow falls between October and April, averaging 15 inches a year.
Peak Season:
The summer months (June to August) are the most popular time to travel to Amarillo. School is out, the weather is warm and many outdoor festivals take place in Amarillo.
Off Season:
Winters (December to February) are drastically cold in Amarillo. Snow is common from October to March and there isn’t much to do in the city when it’s cold. But, if you don’t mind driving around the Texas countryside and stopping off at steak joints and cowboy ranches along the way, it’s likely you’ll find a cheap flight to Amarillo during the winter.
Renting a car is the best way to get around Amarillo. Driving is the most popular, and often the only, method of transportation. Stop at one of the national rental car companies in the city and bring your driver’s license. Most companies require drivers to be 25 years old. Some will rent to people who are ages 21 to 24, but charge a surcharge. Buses run from Monday through Saturday. If you want to grab a taxi, you must book through one of the numerous private taxi companies in the city.
Get your cowboy on at the annual World Championship Ranch Rodeo, held the second week of November in Amarillo. The Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA) hosts the event which features real working cowboys competing in events including wild cow milking, bronco riding, and team penning. The rodeo is held at the Amarillo Civic Center.
