Tamworth is located in New England region of New South Wales and is one of the two major centers – the other being Armidale. It is well known for their annual Country Music Festival in January, as it is the largest Country Music Festival in the Southern Hemisphere.
Tamworth’s love of country music is writ large around the city. It has the “Big Golden Guitar” and the Gallery of Stars Wax Museum on Ringers Road, the Hands of Fame Park at the corner of Kable Avenue and Bridge Street, the Walk A Country Mile Interpretive Center at the Tamworth Visitor Information Center and the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame on Brisbane Street. In Bicentennial Park, stand the bronze statues of Buddy Williams, Tex Morton, Stan Costa and Gordon Parsons.
Tamworth is an important agricultural center and hosts the National Rodeo Finals in January and the Ag Quip takes place in August. It’s also known as the National Equine Capital of Australia and the “First City of Lights”, as it was the first place in the Southern Hemisphere to use electric street lights.
Tamworth enjoys warm summers (December to February) and mild winters (June to August). Maximum average monthly temperatures are in between 84 and 88 F while minimums dip to between 26 and 43 F. Rain falls all year round and summer storms sometimes cause major flooding.
Rental-car companies and taxis are available at Tamworth Airport. Peel Street’s main mall can be covered on foot in less than half an hour and there are a couple of bus companies and taxi companies that offer transport. There are also several miles of cycle ways along the Peel River. A car is recommended for getting around however, especially if you want to get into the surrounding countryside. During the Country Music Festival Tamworth Buslines operates a shuttle service to the major venues and accommodations.
