The second largest city in Colorado State, Colorado Springs is a delightful blend of stunning natural beauty, fascinating museums and engaging family attractions. As the city sits at the foot of Pikes Peak, one of America’s most famous natural landmarks, remarkable scenic vistas are assured. Forming part of the legendary Rocky Mountains, Pikes Peak rises majestically to a height in excess of 4000m and is a popular destination for hikers. Alternatively, you can reach the summit via the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, taking in some truly breath-taking views of lush pine forests and fresh, cascading streams.
Pikes Peak looks down over a city that prides itself on culture and heritage. Colorado Springs boasts a number of museums and art venues including the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Centre and the Pioneers Museum. This latter attraction tells the history of the region and is housed in a beautifully historic building surrounded by lush green lawns and colorful flowers. One of the most unique attractions here is the American Numismatic Association Money Museum, home to some of the rarest coins in United States history.
As the sun sets, you will find a superb variety of eateries and drinking establishments in the city, ranging from casual pavement cafes and pizza parlours to sophisticated high-end restaurants. Afterwards you can see in the small hours of the morning in an elegant wine bar or a chic club. The choice is yours.
The months of March to May and September to November are the best times to visit the city of Colorado Springs. From September, the mountains which surround the city merge into a cavalcade of color as the foliage transforms into a sea of orange, yellow and bright red. Average temperatures during these months are much more comfortable than those of June-August and so are ideal for those who enjoy walking or cycling.
During September to November tourist numbers drop from the highs of the preceding months and many hotel rates follow suit. If you are visiting in November, it is advisable to check which accommodation is available as some hotels close about this time.
Colorado Springs is served by two interstates, I-25 and US 24, in addition to a number of state highways. A bus service called the Mountain Metro runs to various destinations within the city on a regular basis during the day but only offers a limited service during the evenings. The city is bike-friendly and boasts a number of places from which you can hire a bicycle.
Colorado Springs Municipal Airport (COS) is a jointly-owned civil and military hub, offering limited service to 13 American destinations. Colorado’s second-busiest airport, it shares its site with Peterson Air Force Base.
Flights to Colorado Springs Municipal Airport are provided by US carriers only, and only between Colorado Springs and other major change-over destinations, such as Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Phoenix. Small and efficient, the airport provides a viable alternative to massive Denver International.
